Four NWFA Certifications
The 1 Wood Floors Difference
We are not a flooring retailer that also installs. We are NWFA-certified in Installation, Finishing, and Inspection — three separate credentials that fewer than 1% of flooring companies in Michigan hold simultaneously. That means we can specify the right product for your home's environment, install it to NWFA standards, finish it to exactly the color and sheen you want, and independently certify the result.
No subcontractors. No handoffs. One expert from forensic subfloor evaluation through final coat. From NWFA-certified hardwood installation to dustless refinishing, every step is under our roof.

Environmental Science
The Michigan Climate Factor
Michigan's humidity swing — humid summers, bone-dry winters — is one of the most demanding environments for hardwood flooring in the country. Species selection, plank width, core construction, and finish chemistry all need to be matched to your home's specific thermal envelope.
We use digital moisture testing and EMC moisture science protocols on every project before a single plank is laid. For wide-plank installations, subfloor engineering requirements are stricter than standard strip flooring — we engineer the subfloor before we touch the wood.

Everything Your Hardwood Floor Needs
Bespoke Program
The Custom Line
When no catalog product meets the specification, we build the floor from scratch. Our custom line sources European white oak direct — no retail markup, no distributor minimum. We specify the width, the species, the grade, and the finish.
The Plymouth White Oak Estate case study — an 8-inch plank in a custom sand color that did not exist in any catalog — is the signature example of what this looks like in practice. Learn more about our bespoke wide-plank flooring program.

The Finishing Details
Every hardwood installation we complete receives the same level of attention to architectural finish details — the elements that separate a contractor finish from a designer finish:
TOP Step Flush-Mount Vents
Floor vents that match the hardwood grain and color exactly, sitting flush with the surface rather than on top of it
Ali Trims Transition Profiles
European metal transitions at doorways and flooring-type changes — no plastic T-moldings
Schluter Trims
Where hardwood meets tile, we engineer the subfloor heights for a flush, seamless transition with Schluter metal edging
These details are standard on every 1 Wood Floors project. They are not upgrades.
Thirty years of hardwood mastery.
Everything is in the details — from the subfloor up through the finish trim, every decision is engineered for a result that looks like it cost twice as much as it did.
One Contractor. Everything Handled.
Hardwood flooring projects in Michigan homes frequently involve appliance moves, furniture coordination, subfloor repairs and finish work that extends beyond the floor itself. As a Licensed Michigan Residential Builder, we manage the complete scope — licensed plumbing, professional moving, storage, painting and renovation coordination. Especially valuable for out-of-state buyers and relocating homeowners who need a turnkey project completed without being present.

What your neighbors are saying
"My transaction with 1 Wood Floors was the easiest and best I have had in a long time. Ed and Megan are very professional. My project was quick, clean, and the results speak for themselves. Highly recommend."
"Great experience working with 1 Wood Floors installing our new solid wood floor. Megan helped us select the perfect species and Aaron's installation was flawless. The attention to detail from start to finish was exceptional."
"We had a great experience with our flooring install. Our installer Aaron was very professional, he set the standard by which everyone will be judged against. He cleaned up everyday and the way he put the extra effort in to level and prep our floor the right way made us very glad that we got our flooring here. They make the floors themselves and the product speaks for itself. We looked around at many places and couldn't find anything comparable to their product."
"We recently replaced our family room carpet with custom stained hickory. The whole team from 1 Wood Floors, Ed, Megan and Aaron were great to work with. The floor looks incredible and the color match was perfect."
Hardwood Flooring FAQs
Hardwood flooring questions answered.
Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of timber and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a multi-ply core — it is more dimensionally stable than solid, making it suitable for radiant heat, wider planks, and below-grade installations. Both are exceptional when specified for the right environment.
Yes, but it requires careful engineering. We specify materials with proven dimensional stability for radiant environments — typically engineered hardwood or rift and quartered solid wood — and follow strict temperature protocols during acclimation and installation. Species selection, plank width, and finish chemistry all need to match your radiant system.
Solid hardwood can typically be refinished 5 to 8 times over its lifetime, depending on wood thickness and how aggressively it is sanded. Engineered hardwood with a 2mm or greater wear layer can be refinished 1 to 3 times. We always assess the wear layer thickness before recommending any sanding.
Wide-plank hardwood — anything 4 inches or wider — requires stricter subfloor flatness standards than standard strip flooring. We hold to 1/8 inch over 10 feet and use laser-guided flatness mapping to identify and correct every imperfection. For wide planks, we use either nail-with-glue-assist or full-trowel glue-down with moisture-cured urethanes.
For active Michigan homes with kids and pets, we typically recommend Mercier's livUP finish technology or Pallmann's commercial-grade systems. The right finish depends on your traffic patterns, aesthetic preferences, and lifestyle. We present test samples on your actual floor during consultation so you can see exactly what the finish looks like in your light.
