Installation Science
Prescribing the Right Fastening Science.
Every subfloor and wood profile requires a specific installation method to prevent squeaks, cupping, and failure. We utilize five distinct methods:
The standard for solid hardwood under 4 inches wide over a premium wood subfloor. We use precision pneumatic cleats to allow the floor to breathe and expand naturally.
The 4 Pillars
The 4 Pillars of a Lifelong Floor.
The actual fastening of the wood is only a small fraction of the job. Our consultation follows a strict chronological process. Each step informs the next, engineering a floor that will last for generations.
Step 1
Subfloor Evaluation & Engineering.
Before a single plank is discussed, we evaluate the surface we are installing upon. We assess structural integrity, flatness tolerances, and moisture levels of your plywood or concrete slab to determine what prep work is required.

Climate Assessment & Moisture Testing.
A floor is a living architectural element. We evaluate how your home sits on its lot, your thermal envelope, and your specific HVAC and humidification systems to understand the exact environment the wood will live in.

Hardwood Product Specification.
Only after evaluating your subfloor and climate do we specify a product. From solid wood to advanced engineered Baltic Birch cores, we help you select a floor scientifically guaranteed to perform in your home's unique ecosystem.

Long Term Maintenance & Warranties.
A successful installation doesn't end when we leave. How you clean and maintain your floor dictates its lifespan. We provide you with the exact protocols, products, and NWFA guidelines to protect your investment and warranties for decades.

Most flooring installers show up and work around whatever is in the room. We don't. As a Licensed Michigan Residential Builder, we approach every installation as a complete project — not just the floor.
Before we lay a single plank:
- Licensed plumbers handle all gas and water line disconnections — refrigerator water lines, dishwashers, gas stoves, washing machines. We use licensed tradespeople for every utility connection. No exceptions.
- A professional moving company removes your furniture and appliances entirely from the work area. The subfloor gets a full forensic inspection — no surprises, no working around objects.
- We identify and repair every subfloor issue before installation begins. A floor installed over a compromised subfloor will fail — regardless of how good the material is.
For out-of-state buyers and relocating homeowners: we can coordinate the complete scope of your project remotely. You don't need to be on-site. We manage every vendor, every trade, every detail and hand you the keys to a finished floor.

What your neighbors are saying
"Great experience working with 1 Wood Floors installing our new solid wood floor. Megan helped us select the perfect species and Aaron's installation was flawless. The attention to detail from start to finish was exceptional."
"We had a great experience with our flooring install. Our installer Aaron was very professional, he set the standard by which everyone will be judged against. He cleaned up everyday and the way he put the extra effort in to level and prep our floor the right way made us very glad that we got our flooring here. They make the floors themselves and the product speaks for itself. We looked around at many places and couldn't find anything comparable to their product."
"We recently replaced our family room carpet with custom stained hickory. The whole team from 1 Wood Floors, Ed, Megan and Aaron were great to work with. The floor looks incredible and the color match was perfect."
"We've recently had the privilege of working with Megan and Ed at 1 Wood Floors and are thrilled with our new flooring. After much deliberation on species and finish, they guided us to exactly the right product for our home."
Installation FAQs
Installation questions answered.
We use three primary methods: nail down for solid hardwood over wood subfloors, full trowel glue down with moisture-cured urethanes for engineered and wide-plank floors, and nail with glue assist for planks 4 inches or wider. The method is always dictated by the product, subfloor, and environment never by convenience.
A typical 1,000 sq ft residential installation takes 3 to 5 days. However, total project time includes acclimation (which varies by species and conditions), subfloor preparation, installation, and finish curing. We provide a detailed timeline during your consultation.
We coordinate furniture logistics as part of your project plan. For most homes, we ask you to clear smaller items while we handle the heavy lifting literally. We also protect all adjacent areas during the installation process.
Yes, but it requires careful engineering. We specify materials with proven dimensional stability for radiant environments and follow strict temperature protocols during acclimation and installation. Not every product is suitable our specification process ensures the right material for your system.
Any plank 4 inches or wider demands more than nails alone. We use either a nail with glue assist method or a full trowel glue down with moisture-cured urethanes. The wrong method on a wide plank can ruin a beautiful floor within a single season.
Not necessarily. Both are exceptional when specified for the right environment. Premium engineered hardwood with a thick sawn face and marine-grade core offers superior dimensional stability ideal for basements, radiant heat, and ultra-wide planks. Solid hardwood is timeless but requires more stable environmental conditions.
