Floor: Michigan Plank select rift and quartered true random solid walnut, 2 to 7 inch widths. Milled, supplied and installed by 1 Wood Floors.
The Project
This Birmingham, MI home has a select rift and quartered solid walnut floor in true random widths from 2 to 7 inches, milled by Michigan Plank Floor Covering, our own mill, and installed by 1 Wood Floors. One floor runs through the great room, the living room, the bedrooms and the halls.

The Floor: Rift and Quartered Walnut in True Random Widths
Rift and quartered boards are cut so the growth rings run steeply through the face, which gives a straight, quiet grain and a board that moves less with Michigan's seasonal humidity than plain sawn walnut. Mixing six widths from 2 to 7 inches keeps the long runs from looking like a pattern. We nailed every board and added a glue assist, which holds the wider boards flat and keeps the floor quiet underfoot. As always, we check subfloor flatness and the moisture content of the subfloor and the walnut before installing.
Made by Michigan Plank
We own Michigan Plank Floor Covering, so when a design calls for a grade, cut or width mix that no production line offers, we make it. You can see Michigan Plank walnut in our Livonia showroom.
