The Project
This Ann Arbor home replaced its old wood and carpet with one white oak floor that runs through the living room, the family room, the dining room, the sitting room, the sunroom and the halls to the kitchen. 1 Wood Floors supplied and installed Michigan Plank 7 inch select grade white oak, then sanded, stained and finished the floor on site. We also coordinated the white oak stair build, then sanded, stained and finished the treads ourselves so they carry the same color as the floor. The risers are painted white.

The Floor: Michigan Plank 7 Inch Engineered White Oak
Michigan Plank Flooring is owned by 1 Wood Floors, so this floor came from our own production. The boards are 7 inch select grade white oak, engineered to a full 3/4 inch thickness with a 4.5 millimeter sawn face. Why a sawn face matters. The top layer is sawn from the log, the same way a solid board is cut, so it shows real white oak grain rather than a thin veneer. At 4.5 millimeters there is enough wood above the tongue to sand the floor flat after install, as we did here, and to sand and refinish it again years from now. How many more times depends on how the floor is used and how much each sanding takes off, so we look at the floor before any future refinish. Why engineered at 7 inch. A wide solid oak board takes on and gives off more moisture through Michigan's humid summers and dry, heated winters, and it moves more as it does. An engineered board of the same width is built in layers, so it holds its shape better from season to season.
The Finish: Sanded and Stained on Site
Because this floor was finished on site, our crew sanded the installed floor flat before any color went down. That takes out small height differences between boards and gives the stain an even surface across the whole room. The stain is DuraSeal Silvered Gray, a cool, soft tone that keeps the white oak grain visible. Over it we applied Loba 2K Supra, satin, a two component waterborne topcoat built for heavy daily wear.

The Stairs: White Oak Treads, Finished on Site
White oak stairs connect the levels of the home and match the new floor. 1 Wood Floors coordinated the stair build and finish. Our own crew sanded the white oak treads and finished them with the same DuraSeal Silvered Gray stain and Loba 2K Supra, satin, used on the floor. The risers are painted white, so the treads, the floor and the rest of the home come together as one plan. We also installed a Karastan runner in Bisque, wrapped and bound.

Questions About This Project
Yes. The 4.5 millimeter sawn face leaves wood above the tongue for future sanding and refinishing. How many times depends on how the floor wears and how much each sanding removes, so we look at the floor first.
Sanding after install makes the floor flat across every board, and the color goes on in your room under your light. It also let the white oak stair treads be stained and finished to match the floor.
1 Wood Floors supplied the Michigan Plank floor, installed it, and sanded, stained and finished it on site. We also coordinated the stair build and sanded, stained and finished the white oak treads. The risers are painted white.
