We replaced the wood and carpets in our home with white oak flooring. The product they helped us to choose, the installation artistry and the end product post sanding and staining onsite is amazing. We couldn’t be happier with the team, the customer service, the care and attention they gave to our home.

1 Wood Floors installed a wide plank white oak floor and the craftmanship and service was outstanding! Our original floors were not flat or level. 1 Wood Floors was able to correct the problem and install beautiful floors.

Why start to finish beats restoring an old floor

When we restore a floor that's been in a home for 20, 40 or 50 years, we inherit everything that came before us: the wood someone else chose, the subfloor someone else prepped, the nailing someone else did, and every past sanding, wax coat and repair. We can do beautiful work, but we're working within limits we didn't set.

A new site finished floor has none of those limits. We control every element:

    1. Product selection. Species, grade and plank width, chosen with you.
    2. Product specification. Solid or engineered, construction and wear layer, matched to your home and subfloor.
    3. Subfloor preparation. Flattened, fastened and moisture checked before a single board goes down.
    4. Installation. Nail down, glue down or nail with glue assist, matched to the floor and subfloor.
    5. Sand and finish. Planetary sanding and a commercial grade finish, done on site.

Because we own every step, there's nothing to work around. This is the highest end work we do.

    Why site finished

Prefinished boards come with beveled edges and a factory color. A site finished floor is sanded flat after it's installed, so the boards meet in one smooth surface with no grooves to catch dirt, and the stain and sheen are chosen for your light and your rooms.

Two ways to get a site finished floor

    Solid sand and finish

Our classic site finished floor: solid hardwood, nailed down, then sanded and finished in your home.

    • Widths: 2 1/4 inch strip, 3 inch plank or 4 inch plank.
    • Installation: nail down. At 4 inches and under, industry installation guidelines don't call for glue assist, so we can leave it out and keep your cost down. If you want the extra hold, glue assist is still available.
    • Best for: classic strip and plank looks, and the more budget friendly path to a site finished floor.
    Premium

    Engineered sand and finish

Our highest end floor: engineered planks built on 3/4 inch Baltic birch plywood cores with a 5 to 6 millimeter sandable hardwood face. That's just as much sandable wood as a regular solid floor, so it can be sanded just as many times.

    • Widths: 6, 7, 8 inches and wider, up to 16 inch planks, in a range of species. custom wide plank
    • Installation: our premium methods, full glue down or nail with glue assist.
    • Why it costs more: wider, more stable boards and a more involved installation. As planks get wider, that stability is what keeps the floor flat and tight for decades.

Both tiers get the same planetary sanding and the same standard two component waterborne finish.

Why we go engineered once floors get wide

Once a plank reaches about 5 inches wide, we switch to engineered. In Michigan, with our humidity swings, a wide engineered plank is simply the more stable floor, and we upgrade the installation to glue down or nail with glue assist. These engineered floors are as sandable as solid wood, last just as long if not longer thanks to newer construction, and look better longer, because a structurally stable floor in a home with the right environmental control stays flat and tight.

    What about wide plank solid?

We can do it, and we have. But wider solid planks are much more prone to movement: cupping, gapping and seasonal shifting. If you choose wide solid, you need to understand how it behaves and keep your home's humidity and temperature controlled year round. That's why we usually keep solid floors at 4 inches or narrower and go engineered above that.

    Why flat matters

We sand with planetary sanders. Several discs turn in opposite directions, so the machine flattens the floor instead of following its dips. Ordinary drum sanders leave chatter marks and swirl scratches; planetary sanding gives the flattest, most scratch free surface possible, so the finish lays out smooth and even, like a sheet of glass.

    Any color you can picture

Because the floor is finished on site, the color is made for your rooms, not picked from a factory chart. From natural tones to rich espresso to modern grays and custom mixed stains, we put test samples on your actual installed floor and look at them in your light before you choose. Sheen ranges from a flat matte to a soft satin.

    Our standard finish

Our standard finish is a two component, waterborne, commercial grade finish. It's made by several brands; the two we rely on most are Loba and Bona. It's built for heavy traffic, and it lets you get back on your floor and move all your furniture back in 72 hours after the final coat.

Clean job site, no lingering odor

Waterborne finishes keep odors down. Combined with our dust containment equipment, that means a clean job site and no finish smell hanging around your home after we leave.

Other finishes, if you want a different look

    • Oil modified polyurethane for a warmer, richer tone.
    • Hardwax oils such as Rubio Monocoat 2C for a natural, matte feel.

    Dust collection

Every sander runs with dust collection at the source, connected to HEPA vacuums. Barriers go up, and HVAC and openings get sealed. No sanding system is 100% dust free, but our setup captures about 98% at the source, so the rest of your home stays livable.
